General Advice for At-Home Whitening

Before Whitening

  • Brush and floss your teeth.

Steps for Using the Whitening Tray

  1. Place a small drop of gel (pea-sized) on the front wall of the tray.
  2. Insert the tray onto your teeth. Remove air bubbles by gently pressing on the tray to spread the gel over the entire surface of your teeth. Wipe away any excess gel on the gums with a tissue or washcloth.
  3. Wear the tray for at least 4 hours during the day or overnight. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while wearing the tray.
  4. Once done, gently remove the tray, rinse, and brush your teeth. Clean the tray with a toothbrush, dry it, and store it in its case.
  5. One syringe of whitening gel typically lasts about 3 days. The whitening treatment takes about 10 to 14 days to achieve the final result.

Possible Temporary Issues

  • Your gums might become whitish and sensitive the next morning, and your throat may be irritated due to excess gel in the tray.
  • You may experience sensitivity to cold, heat, or touch.
  • You may feel small electric shocks.

How to Manage Sensitivity

  • If sensitivity is too intense, you can take Advil or Motrin and brush your teeth with a toothpaste for sensitive teeth (e.g., Sensodyne).
  • You can also take a break from whitening for a night or more.

Additional Recommendations

  • Avoid coffee, dark sodas, and red wine on treatment days.
  • Avoid acidic foods as they can cause sensitivity.
  • The treatment will whiten your teeth but will not whiten fillings, veneers, or crowns. Necessary adjustments should be made at least 2 weeks after the end of the treatment.
