Post-Operative Advice for Gum Grafting

Will I experience pain?

Mild to moderate pain is normal during the first few days after the operation. Take your painkillers at regular intervals, as prescribed, for your comfort.

Will I swell?

A slight swelling and bruising (blue) of the face are likely and can be reduced as follows:

• Apply an ice pack to the operated area. Keep the ice pack on your face for about 20 minutes per hour for the first 24 hours (even if the swelling is not yet visible).
• STOP applying ice packs after 24 hours, as this can slow healing and increase the risk of infection.

Will I bleed?

Even if you do not bleed when leaving the clinic, your saliva will remain tinged with red for the first 24 hours. To prevent bleeding, follow these guidelines:

• For the first 24 hours: AVOID eating or drinking hot foods, DO NOT drink with a straw, smoke, spit, or rinse your mouth.
• For the first 48 hours: AVOID exercising.

If bleeding occurs, it can be easily stopped as follows:

1. Stay calm—the more agitated you are, the more you will bleed.
2. AVOID spitting or rinsing—as this will increase the bleeding.
3. Identify the bleeding site.
4. Take a clean washcloth and moisten it with cold water. Apply firm and direct pressure on the bleeding site for at least 15-20 minutes.
5. If the bleeding persists, repeat using a moistened tea bag to apply pressure.

Can I eat?

• Day 1: Only eat foods that are cold or lukewarm and of a soft consistency, such as ice cream, yogurt, pudding, and purées.
• Days 2 to 10: Eat soft or semi-soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated side of your mouth. AVOID spicy or acidic foods. Suitable options include eggs, ground meat, fish, soup, well-cooked vegetables, lentils, pasta, and rice.

Can I brush my teeth?

• Day 1: Brush and floss throughout your mouth. Do not rinse your mouth.
• Days 2 to 10: Brush and floss areas that were not treated. Avoid brushing and flossing the treated teeth for 10 days. Use the prescribed mouthwash twice a day for one minute during this period.

Do I need to have my stitches removed?

Depending on the type of stitches used, they may dissolve on their own or need to be removed. Regardless, it is important to come back for a check-up about 10 days after the surgery.
