Oral Surgery: Postoperative Instructions
Whether your surgery involves a simple tooth extraction, removal of an impacted tooth, or a complex surgical operation, below is some advice you can follow at home to lessen and perhaps even avoid postoperative complications.
- Bite softly into the cotton compresses placed in your mouth, applying constant pressure for about 45 minutes. After you remove the compresses, if you notice that there is still a substantial amount of blood, you can use new compresses (or wet, wrung-out teabags). Bite into them for another 45 minutes, applying constant pressure. Light bleeding is normal after surgery. Even if your saliva is tinged with blood, do not worry. Do not rinse, spit, or drink with a straw for the next 24 hours.
- It is normal to feel discomfort for 24 to 48 hours after surgery. The degree of discomfort depends on the individual and type of surgery. To ease discomfort, take prescribed painkillers on the first day. If you don’t feel the need the next day, take a milder analgesic, but avoid medications containing aspirin.
- If antibiotics were prescribed, always complete the full course to effectively control infection.
- Swelling may occur after surgery. To prevent or lessen swelling, apply ice cubes wrapped in a damp towel as soon as possible after surgery. Do this for no more than fifteen minutes per hour and only in the first 24 hours. Ensure it does not disturb your sleep, as rest is necessary for healing.
- Jaw movement may be somewhat painful after surgery, sometimes lasting 7 to 10 days. If this occurs, do not force the muscles. Adjust your diet: start with softer and colder foods like pasta, fish, or soup on the first day, and progressively introduce more solid foods in the following days. Avoid spicy or very hot foods.
- If bleeding has stopped after 24 hours, rinse your mouth five to six times a day with salt water (1/4 teaspoon in a glass of water) or with Listerine Zero.
- Brush your teeth normally but avoid irritating the healing area.
- Do not smoke for at least one week after surgery, as smoke slows down the healing process.
- If pain or bleeding persists for more than 24 hours, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us immediately.
